I placed soot coated paper on an old XPȺ (Western Red Cedar) stump next to a large patch of DḴÁ¸IȽĆ (Salal) as raindrops started to fall. As they made contact, the drops exploded into tiny dancing black beads that displaced particles leaving exquisitely fine networks of lines. The repellent surface of these pieces traced the intensity of rain over a 1 hour period. 

Displacements maps rain’s interaction with a soot-laden surface, mirroring wildfire-altered soils that resist absorption. Raindrops bead and scatter residue into shifting networks, leaving delicate, ephemeral marks that echo post-fire landscapes shaped by runoff, erosion, ecological loss, and fragile regeneration.
