Project statement
This series of ink monotypes, taken from the surface of rainwater, explore the internal tension one experiences when simultaneously trying to hold on and let go in the face of change. Ink patterns are formed on the water’s surface by the opposing force of cohesive water molecules trying to stay together while a surfactant pulls them apart. I use a mindfulness technique that requires stillness of body and breath to keep the patterns from drifting out of control.
Once touched by paper the inks are quickly absorbed through capillary action, the same phenomenon that draws rainwater against the force of gravity from the roots of a tree into its highest leaf where it vaporizes back into the atmosphere.
